Games are made to be enjoyed by all, for those who suffer from disability might have a hard time playing some games, why you ask? One of them is because controllers, this small piece of expensive hardware is meant for people who have two hands, can see, hear, and for some games speech and mobility. But can't those with a disability use those features? what are the considerations? let's take a look at one game, which is regarded as one of the most accessible lately.

The Last of Us 2 Redefine Accessibility

This game presents the world with a whole new standard of accessibility, making a pervasive list of accessibility settings which you can see with the URL below

The Last of Us Part II - Accessibility
The Last of Us Part II features more than 60 accessibility settings, with expanded options focused on fine-motor and hearing, as well as completely new features that benefit low-vision and blind players. This video highlights control customization and the ability to completely remap every command t…

If you are lazy to look at the list to sum it up, they have nearly all ranges of options including:

  • Vision accessibility presets are aimed at those who have a low vision or are blind, these include text-to-speech, high-contrast display, HUD scaling, cues, and in-game movement assistance.
  • Hearing accessibility presets that are aimed at those who are hard of hearing or deaf, include awareness indicators, prompts, indicators, subtitles (names, and directions), and vibration cues
  • Motor accessibility presets are aimed at those who have a physical or mobility disability, these include aim assist, camera assist, and other simple quality of life improvements.

Other than that the game also allows you to remap all the controls, providing an easier time for those who need a special controller, also other conventional accessibility settings that are becoming the norms today.

So What is Special About These?

Having a larger set of options allows the game to be inclusive meaning everyone can play it effectively never mind if you have some kind of disability, and one of the cool features is accessibility for those who are blind! Imagine finding a game that doesn't need a good vision remembering we interact largely through visual cues.

Implementing all these needs dedications, the most important thing is the mindset of inclusiveness, the thought of not catering to some demographics of your consumer. The kind of low vision accessibility is kinda hard to find even today but is already being implemented in newer games, and I hope this will become the norm to include such large options for games.

Accessibility Means Anyone Can Play!

So keep the need for larger accessibility settings so not only you can play, but everyone!

A thought for today.
