This is my game concept for Game Technology Course

Overview

The game concept that I have in my mind is a basic single player first-person realistic horror game, where you as a player set in an underwater facility are left alone because of a "freak accident" and must survive by {building a makeshift base survive each day. If safe players can scourge the facility areas to find food and weapons.

Design

Basic Interactive Design

I'd love to make a 3D basic game but with an engaging atmosphere, as I think 2D is quite limited in how to deliver a certain set of design considerations but is not out of my radar for now. Wanted to try Unreal Engine 5 the newest iteration of the UE game engine. Other than the considerations above utilising 2D with the power of UE5 is I think it is an overkill, and will result in the game taking up too many "unneeded blobs" in development and production but it will be far simpler to design the assets, animation, and level-design as we only need to care about 2 axes.

The game will utilize objects mapped to the 3D map coupled with a physics engine (I'm thinking the mechanics are like Arkane's Prey) in which the object of the world (map) is left out in their previous state and the character can interact with the said object with basics control we can found in any other game.

Perspective

The game will be defaulted to First Person View, as this will give the players a more direct connection with the character they are playing as. As an added bonus first person will give a more immersive feel when playing as this gives us the developer the power to let the player experience just like the character would, unlike in their personal games character animations (at least the playable character) can be toned down.

This presents another issue, as first person "grandeur" acts will be hard to do. Games such as Uncharted, and Devil May Cry let you enjoy the action scene because we can see the actions our characters are taking. So first person means:

  • Likely less work in main character animations
  • Can give a more immersive feel
  • Accessibility issues
  • Can give limitations in terms of gameplay

Genre

As I said above it will be a horror game.

Game Type

It will be a single player game

Scenario and Story

Set in an underwater facility near the Baltic, this underwater facility is needed to find an oil pocket to mine into, after being established some strange occurrences happen. people begin to hallucinate chanting some weird word every night Until someday the ground that the facility mining is suddenly shifts and something terrible has awoken. Being a newly recruited engineer assigned to the facility, you arrived at the facility to find it deserted and began to try to investigate.

Post-investigation analysis reveals that something otherwordly has happened and you began to hear the noises "that they are talking about", sadly your next boa will arrive a month from today so you need to barricade yourself in a safe room that you found and needed to scavenge for resources when it is safe to do so.

The endings will be split into two parts, by successfully finding the root cause of the problem you find there is "something terrible below" that has been awoken and you decided to venture deeper into the lowest level facility in the hope to hold it back as long as you can, preventing it from being fully released. The second ending will be you being rescued by boat and left the premises with that "something" broke free at all

Gameplay

The gameplay will consist of simple first person items interactable in which you can view documents left by the previous crew. Resource management gameplay in which some metrics needed to be satisfied lest the player will be given a penalty or even a game over. The stealth mechanic to "sneak about" enemies should the players don't choose to engage. Base management and melee system would be the last needed mechanic.

Base management will be done by metric and the number of enemies left in an area (death will be permadeath both for players and enemies), if left untreated and your base is "noisy" it will attract enemies to attack your base and if the enemies managed to destroy your base you must set-up base elsewhere. The melee system is as the system name implies melee combat to give a high-risk combat mechanic.
